Pre-school Assessments

Virginia Literacy & Language Screener (VLLS) and Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program (VKRP)

Virginia Literacy & Language Screener(VLLS) and Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program (VKRP) are preschool assessments designed to capture kindergarten readiness and provide tools to assist teachers in identifying students at risk, helping children improve skills, and reducing the achievement gap. The VLLS (or revised PALS) is the VDOE-sponsored literacy screener designed to give a snapshot of critical literacy skills at a single moment.

VLLS focuses on decoding and encoding and does not offer a comprehensive picture of a child's literacy skills. The VKRP aims to build a more comprehensive understanding of school readiness. As an assessment system, VKRP adds measures of mathematics, self-regulation, and social skills in Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten to complement the VLLS. At this time, publicly funded programs, VPI, and Mixed Delivery are required to participate. Other publicly funded programs, such as Head Start and subsidies, are being encouraged to participate.
